Julian shipp, piano, guitar, drums

Julian is a multi instrumentalist who performs primarily as a jazz pianist. He began playing cello at age 8 and studied saxophone, French horn, and tuba before moving to California in 2000. Finding himself without a school orchestra or band to join, he began studying guitar and bass. Attending high school at The Drew School in San Francisco, he joined the jazz band and began studying piano and drums. Julian received his Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Jazz Piano from San Francisco State University. His influences include Thelonious Monk, Wynton Kelly, and Ahmad Jamal. In addition to teaching at ViBO Music, Julian is an Artist-in-Residence at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts and maintains a busy performing schedule with his own trio, The Midnight Moods, and as a sideman for countless one-off Bay Area jazz ensembles. In his free time, Julian can be found building or modifying guitars, hiking, or visiting museums.
